Having grown up in the Bronx, clinical and forensic psychologist, Dr. David Edminson knows how difficult it is for those on the street to receive the help they need. A different kind of doctor, he works out of his van on Skid Row from the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., earning him the title of the ‘Midnight Shrink’. David is often consulted to work up a psychological profile on a suspect for the LAPD, and it's on one of these, that he finds out about a serial killer on the loose. The killer is targeting young, beautiful blonde strippers–all of which fits his girlfriend Max perfectly. In the midst of it all, he uncovers a secret about his beloved grandfather that makes him question everything he once believed about his family. Peppered with fascinating patients and their dialogue, The Midnight Shrink offers a unique protagonist in the genre of murder mysteries. With deep insight into the gritty streets of Los Angeles, the author draws the reader deep into his world through terrific descriptive prose and focused pacing. Unfortunately, the novel loses steam midway through as the storyline divides to focus on the main character’s past. Had the author chosen to focus more on the story of the serial killing, adding extra well-drawn characters as suspects to the list, versus an additional story arc, it would have continued as a more compelling read.
